Over years, companies have come to accept the inclusion of gay families in their advertisements as part of telling their brand story to an inclusive market. One such advertisement is the Coca-Cola Multilanguage Super Bowl commercial on February 2, 2014 (Emery n.p). To America, this advertisement pioneered featuring the gay community through a gay couple that takes their daughter roller-skating. From the Gay & Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLAAD) and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community, the advertisement won in every way. Over the last decade, the shift in public opinion on same sex marriage from 58% in 2003 to 33% in 2013 is an indication of gradual acceptance attributed to huge group of youthful adults (Pew Research n.p). This ascent in the acceptance of gay rights has seen 17 states and the District of Colombia legalizi ng gay marriages. This shift is what the Coca-Cola advertisement took advantage of to show the country the growing majority of Americans from all occupations in favor and support of their LGBT family, friends, and neighbors. Further, the advertisement is a pacesetter to the corporate in America that successful business today also means including LGBT. According to (Ferraro n.p), the behind the scenes revealed one of the dads acknowledging that people can now accept and respect them as a family. The Impact of Ancient DNA Discovered in Siberia For many decades, there has been an overwhelming curiosity about what life was like before humans ruled the earth - back when life on land, off land, and even the very land itself was very different than it is today. Pieces of this puzzle have been discovered all over the world, ranging from perfectly preserved skeletons at the bottom of bodies of water to fragments discovered in vast deserts. Due to the conditions of the ancient finds, there is only so much that can be deciphered about the past, which leads to the creations of various theories of what life was like in different areas and why and when it changed. However, in at least one stretch of land, there is a lot that can be told thanks to one of the best finds in recent history: some of the oldest DNA ever recovered. This amazing find was first reported in April of 2003, when it was told that animal and plant DNA was found in the permafrost of northeastern Siberia (Thomas 2003). The permafrost was located between the Lena and Kolyma rivers of former western Beringia and was drilled out under scrupulous conditions – using extreme care not to let any of the precious samples become contaminated. In fact, strains of specialized bacteria were used to ward off any possible contamination (Willerslev 2003). The event was led by Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark (Thomas 2003), who’s international team looked towards drilling for sediment deposits in the layered ice when other areas containing possible ancient DNA samples provided only rare samples that were highly susceptible to extraction and examination difficulties (Willerslev 2003). Ratified by the states in the winter of 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment was put into play. It declared, â€Å"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude†¦shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction.† (Primary Documents). Officially, this amendment outlawed the practice of slavery, there was, however, an exception. That exception was the use of involuntary servitude, or slavery, as a form of punishment. More than four million African Americans walked free in 1865, this had a rather negative impact on the Southern economy. And so came the Convict-lease system. Many white Southerners saw this system as a solution to their economic hardships; nonetheless, it was often seen as being worse than slavery. In addition to the convict lease system was the practice of Sharecropping and Peonage. These forms of subjugation brought even greater distress to the newly freed African Americans. Despite the ratifying of the Thirteenth Amendment the abhorrent treatment of this newly freed race did not change significantly thanks to programs like the Convict Lease system, Peonage, and Sharecropping.
